“I came here to learn about eagle hunting. My grandfather was an eagle hunter. I came here to catch an eagle, and learn how to train it. I'm looking for a teacher who will train me.”
- Kuma speaking to Kairatkhan
Kuma Uliksat is a 19 year old ethnic Kazak who was raised in the capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbataar (Red Hero). His passion to learn how to hunt with eagles was fuelled by the fact that his grandfather was an eagle hunter himself, until he became too elderly to carry the huge birds. Kuma has many fond childhood memories of time spent in the countryside with his Grandfather, Jalpa, and his eagle.
Eagle hunting is a strong component of Kazak identity, one that has been fostered for many centuries at least. Kuma wants to pass on the tradition of hunting with eagles to his own children (when he has them).
